Este texto trata dos antecedentes, evolução, panorama atual e características das escolas de formação de professores de História no Brasil. Com caráter ensaístico, apoia-se na legislação vigente e na revisão da bibliografia e de dados do Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais. Buscam-se as mudanças e permanências na educação superior em História e nas licenciaturas em geral, que contribuem para explicar os dados apresentados. Destacam-se as resistências e pressões referentes ao modelo alternativo, no qual docência e ciência se integram numa formação unificada, que previne a dissociação entre teoria e prática. O argumento central é que o modelo inaugural da formação de professores, chamado de “3+1”, ainda marca a mentalidade de parte significativa de historiadores e pedagogos responsáveis pela formação dos novos profissionais, bem como as estruturas acadêmicas.
