Scale as a geographical imperative
the scalar duality and the non-scalarity in “Jeux d’échelles. La micro-analyse à l'experiénce”

The concept of scale is emphasized from a geographical perspective for a critical analysis of parts of the book “Jeux d’échelles. La micro-analyse à l'experiénce”, edited by Jacques Revel. Some conceptualizations of scale (cartographic and geographical) are presented in order to examine its use in the book's “Présentation” and in the chapters “Micro-analyse et construction du social”, written by Jacques Revel, and “De l'échelle en histoire”, by Bernard Lepetit, aiming to reflect on the limits and potential of the concept's use with reference to microhistory. The main critique is directed at the scalar duality “micro vs. macro” and the non-scalarity present in different parts of the chapters. The geographical scale is proposed as a dynamic concept, capable of connecting Geography and History, highlighting the need for a non-hierarchical and integrative approach between the sciences.
