Abstract

The concept of human nature plays a crucial role within Kant’s reflection on the foundations of morals. The thematization of human essence calls the attention for the ambivalence of the human being, as he belongs
both to the phenomenal and noumenical sphere. In the light of this presupposition, we aim at discussing the relationship between the objective foundations of morals and the exercise of subjectivity, which determines moral rules and principles. By focusing the attention mainly on The Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals and The Critique of Practical Reason, we will try to verify if it is compatible indeed, in Kant’s reflection, the
freedom/autonomy of the moral agent with the a priori dimension of the unconditioned principle of human action.
