This paper argues that there is a relation between “katharsis” and time in the ontology of the work of art presented by Hans-Georg Gadamer in his Wahrheit und Methode (Gadamer, 1960). Such relation is caracterized by a temporal trace, a reference to the future, inscribed by Gadamer in the animic process of “katharsis” as he incorporates it from Aristotle while translating it as “Reinigung”. To demonstrate this, the paper starts by retrieving some parallels between the treatment of time in Gadamer’s great opus and in the existential analytic of Sein und Zeit (Heidegger). After this, it examines some aspects of the incorporation of the Poetics and the Rhetoric (Aristotle) by Gadamer to his ontology of the work of art. Finally, it shows how is it possible to locate the temporal trace inscribed by Gadamer in “katharsis”.
