Eternal nows and contemplative interiorities in the poetry of António Cícero
Keywords:
António Cícero; contemporary poetry; classical culture; postmodernismAbstract
António Cícero's poetry, with musical origins in song lyrics for artists such as Caetano Veloso or Adriana Calcanhoto, is one of the most original and important in contemporary Brazilian poetry. This article aims to explore, through a close reading of several of the author's poems, how he articulates the classical heritage of his philosophical training with the assumptions of postmodernism, highlighting the unique position of his poetry in relation to the modern world, which he criticises, but for which he presents a humanist vision based on the classical Greco-Roman tradition of which he is heir. A concatenation of “eternal nows” and contemplative interiorities, António Cícero's poetry makes him one of the most original and urgent poets of contemporary Brazil.
