100 pages a day: Bookstagram, BookTube and the ways of conducting reader behavior in contemporary times

Abstract

This article aims to analyze some ways of conducting reading behavior in contemporary times, based on the speeches that circulate in the profiles and channels of four highly prominent literary influencers in Brazil. The data, coming from lurking on Bookstagram profiles and BookTube channels, was scrutinized with inspiration from Foucauldian discourse analysis. It is anchored, in theoretical terms, in the conceptual lenses of Foucauldian studies and Cultural Studies, especially based on the notions of cultural pedagogies and government. The analyzes carried out indicate that the subjects are led to a daily and organized reading practice, defining reading goals, using control applications and establishing schedules. The speeches lead the subjects to specific ways of being a reader, resulting in an indebted reader, a self-entrepreneur, a self-statistician and disciplined. In these ways of being a reader, relationships can be observed with the principles of neoliberal rationality and with school practices.
