Le Corbusier and the new architecture of the 20th century

Abstract

The development of 20th century’ modern architecture, immersed in the economic and sociocultural advances, would propose a break with classical shapes and would bring a new way of thinking, conceiving, and practicing architecture, focusing on the formal and constructive simplicity as a revolution. With an intimate analysis within this modernist concept, this article proposes to study architectural, visual, and even furniture works produced by Le Corbusier. Under the five corbusian pillars, the curious urbanism of Ville Radieuse, the religious architecture of Dame Du Haut, and the Pavillon Le Corbusier become key points for this study. The paintings Still Life and The Poem of the Right Angle, as well as his famous LC3 Armchair and the The Open Hand Monument, in turn, are adapted to the perspective of the Modulor, a system of mathematical proportions developed by Corbusier himself to conceive many of his works.
