Aesthetics in Benedetto Croce

Debates and Contributions to Early 20th-Century Art

Abstract

In this article, we undertake a brief exploration into
Benedetto Croce’s philosophy concerning art and art
criticism. To do so, we will consider some key points of
his critical theory, such as art and intuition, historical
criticism, aesthetic criticism, as well as the intersection
between criticism and art history, among other
relevant aspects. This exploration proves pertinent
in the Brazilian context, given the close relations between
the country’s artistic productions and those of
Italy, especially during the first half of the 20th century.
