Abstract

his article is about the inner courtyard as an archetype of the mandala. Only typological discussion fails the sufficient understanding about this area. This, coupled with the fact that the courtyard is present in the architecture of various civilizations and historical time in a long line, conducts to the interpretation that it is an archetype (taking Jung's concept). The courtyard is analyzed as a result of unconscious expectations that are manifested collectively in search of the individual intrinsic to its position in the world. It is then interpreted as a symbolic expression - the mandala - as a way of achieving a state of introspection
