INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS IN THE “CRACOLÂNDIA DA LUZ”: A GEOGRAPHICAL APPROACH

Abstract

The consolidation of ‘Cracolândia’ da Luz in São Paulo came to the surface some speeches and practices that, to a certain extent, gave rise to interventions in the production of urban space in São Paulo. The forms and contents produced in this space reveal socio-spatial interactions in a part of the urban territory and directly impact on the (de) valuation of this space. There is an interest to transforming this area that currently is marked by socio-spatial segregation in a fi nancial trading center. As such, the ways of occupation and appropriation occur in a confl icting way between society, the state and the real estate market. As a theoretical basis, it used Santos (1978), that considers space phenomena in its totality because in this space, contains the particular, that is, the ‘Cracolândia’ da Luz, which is inserted in the whole of the greater Brazilian city whose objective is to refl ect and analyze the urban production of this space, from the interests and confl icts revealed in their socio-spatial practice. At last, this research is aimed from documents’ analysis, theoretical references and fi gures, in order to paving a path that contributes to the understanding of the theme in the context of modernity.
