Abstract

Remote sensing products provide information about the status and coverage of Earth´s land surface vegetation c. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems are active sensors that provide cloud-free images suited for forest studies. This article presents an introduction to radar fundamentals, followed by a non exhaustive review of articles covering forest mapping, inventory and biomass estimation with SAR images. To conclude, past, recent and planned orbital SAR systems are presented as a guide to the future directions of forest studies with radar data.
