This work provides a preliminary study on the use of nuclear propulsion. The fundamental aspects that encompass the understanding of nuclear energy are presented, and, subsequently, the main theories that permeate the study of nuclear propulsive systems are introduced. This allows the understanding of the main equations that govern the families of nuclear propulsion systems (NTP - from English Nuclear Thermal Propulsion). For each family, the main physical concepts are addressed, as well as the basic equations for their understanding.
