Abstract

There have been a number of previous syntactic approaches on topic-subject construction in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Some are centered on the familiar Agree operation (CHOMSKY, 2000, 2001), and EPP effects; some focused on the role of historical gramatical changes to explain the emergence of topic subjects in BP grammar; some argues that functional projections related to the CP system are active to derive the topic interpretation. In this Squib we present a unified analyses of the topic-subject genitive and locative, based on the syntactic perspective of the argumental structure (MARANTZ, 2007, 2013). Also adopting the hypothesis that the topic-subject construction is an Applicative structure (PYLKANNEN, 2008), we argue that an interpretable person feature on the applicative head is responsible for the grammatical marking of both genitive and locative topics as a center of perspective (PANCHEVA & ZUBIZARRETA, 2017).
