Copula drop em Karitiana (Tupi): uma instância de sluicing
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this squib we discuss the possibility of copular verb omission in Karitiana (Tupi). We will propose that the copula drop phenomenon is an instance of sluicing in this language, a type of ellipsis in which the sentential part of CP (TP) is elided when C is merged (cf. MERCHANT, 2001, 2004). We will argue that the only element in TP affected by the deletion operation is the copula, because the material to the right of the verb is in a phase domain (cf. CHOMSKY, 2000, 2001; BOŠKOVIĆ, 2014) already sent to Spell-out at the derivational step in which the ellipsis applies. We will show that such constructions satisfy the licensing conditions proposed by Merchant (2001, 2004) and that they do not require identity conditions to occur. We will also point out similarities and differences with regard to the treatment offered by Barros (2010) for Brazilian Portuguese specificational questions in which the copula can be deleted as well.
