On the relevance of dialectical literary criticism
some questions of method and an experience of analysis

This article addresses some of the constituent principles of dialectical literary criticism, considering in particular the works of Antonio Candido and Gyorgy Lukács, with the aim of discussing the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the tradition to which these two thinkers belong. To this end, the article first seeks to debate how the creative process transforms the surrounding objectivity into a sensitive figuration of the social and human world. The topic is discussed here considering “the measure inherent in the object” (Marx, 2004) as the core of the “laws of beauty,” which characterize the specificity of works that are the result of artistic labor. In the second part of the article, we present a critical reading of Manuel Bandeira's poem “A estrada” (The Road), drawing in particular on Lukács' notion of particularity. The central hypothesis of the reading is that the poem presents a situation in which lyrical subjectivity reveals a cathartic process, in which the overcoming of mere singularity is glimpsed through an opening to generality.
