The present text is part of an analysis between the satirical nature in the work of Machado de Assis, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, and the social critical element. It also seeks to investigate the relationship established by satire between the critical instrument and the breaking of social standards established in society at the time. In this way, satire figures as a resource used by the author to break, through caustic laughter, the prevailing social institutions of the time vices.
