BETWEEN THE NOVEL AND THE DIARY: THE SHATTERING OF THE SUBJECT AMID SALAZARISM

Abstract

The tradition of the self-narrative has been present in the records since classical antiquity. When appropriated by the novelistic genre, which has appeared in the middle of the 18th century, this writing, due to its fictional character, allows us to achieve different peculiarities that the purely autobiographical production does not reach. Thereby, this article aims to understand how the concept of memory and identification comprehend by this writing is manifested in the book Bolor, published in Portugal, during the Salazar regime. Thus, we intend to show how the concepts raised are established within the interpositions of different literary genres that the novel is used to, not only try new literary aesthetic standards, but also to suggest, in an explicit way, an atmosphere of censorship and apathy that surrounded the portuguese society of that time.
