Abstract

This article deals with the Swiss International Radio and its transcultural mediation of Swiss culture during the Cold War. It will focus on the political and aesthetic strategy of the Swiss International Radio and the way in which Switzerland was represented abroad, using the example of the Arabic Service of the Swiss Radio International and its adaption of the famous novel «Heidi» by Swiss author Johanna Spyri (Rifai 1968).

Author Biography

  • Patricia Jäggi, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Lucerne

    Patricia Jäggi is a research associate at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Lucerne ”“ Music, and works in the fields of Anthropology of Sound, Listening and the Senses, Sound Studies, and Sound Art. Currently she is working on an SNSF-funded project on practices of aural perception, meaning-making, and audio recording in field ornithology, avian bioacoustics, and environmental sound art. She is part of the curatorial team of “Radiophonic Spaces”, an exhibition and database about radio art (Tinguely Museum, Basel; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; currently: Bauhaus-Universität Weimar). Jäggi completed her PhD-studies in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Basel in 2017, during which time she was a research fellow at the Institute for Media and Music studies at Humboldt University Berlin. Her thesis deals with cultural politics, sonic aesthetics, and subversive listening in international radio broadcasting during the Cold War. This exploration of post-war transnational narratives included the Arabic «Heidi» radio series. Jäggi holds an MA in Cultural Analysis and Comparative Literature Studies from the University of Zürich, and a BA in German Language and Literature and History of Art from the University of Berne.
