This article consists of a textual and visual record of the exhibition The Emergence of the Contemporary: AvantGarde Art in Japan, 1950-1970, which took place in Rio de Janeiro’s Paço Imperial museum, in July/August 2016. The exhibition presented the panorama of Japanese avant-garde art focusing on the work of artists whose practice and theories marked the transition from painting to threedimensional space, performance, and conceptual art. Curated by Pedro Erber with the collaboration of Suzuki Katsuo, the show brought together some of the most representative works of postwar art in Japan, as well as photographs, films, and historical documents.
