Residencial tourism and the challenges for rural communities in Jalisco, México

The objective of the work is to identify the effects generated by the increase in the demand for tourist housing in rural communities of Jalisco, based on the changes that the "new normality" implies in tourism. The research is qualitative and was carried out based on documentary review and interviews with real estate agents, in order to identify the dynamics of buying and selling real estate for second homes in rural municipalities near the largest cities in the state. The results show a growing interest in the acquisition of second homes for vacation and tourist rental purposes in the municipalities near these cities, especially the so-called Magical Towns, however, other locations with more affordable prices are joining the market, with all the negative effects that this entails and constitutes one of the great challenges that rural communities face.
