Abstract
Freudian instinctual theory revolves around a duality, there are two opposing tendencies in constant struggle at the unconscious level of our psychic activity. In Beyond the Pleasure Principle, published in 1920, Sigmund Freud weaves the plot of the sinister instinctual dynamic that surrounds our mental processes. For Freud, there is in the psyche a strong tendency to the pleasure principle, which is the primary principle of the mental apparatus functioning. However, “forces” or “constellations” are often opposed to this primary trend. It is this dispute between these two instincts that this essay will focus on, adopting as its core Freud's theory and Marcuse's interpretation of this theory.
