Quilombhoje, Negrícia Group and the pioneering debate about afro-brazilian literature teaching in the 1980s

Long before the sanction of Law 10.639/2003, which instituted the mandatory teaching of African and Afro-Brazilian culture throughout the school curriculum, especially in Literature, the black movement discussed the necessity of the Brazilian school to return to cultural heritage of black people in its contents. In this article, I discuss the debate held in the 1980s by literary collectives such as Quilombhoje (SP) and the Negrícia Group (RJ) about the role of Afro-Brazilian literature teaching in the education of students. With that, I seek to reflect on the creative continuum of the black movement in Brazil in order to reveal the historical path of the struggles for knowledge about Brazilian society elaborated by black men and women over time.
