Abstract

The article investigates the tentative reform of the International Monetary System (IMS), discussed within an ad hoc forum (C20). The negotiations took place in a period of great turbulence, following the suspension of the gold/dollar convertibility, in 1971. We argue that between 1971 and the end of 1973, the US government was open to negotiating IMS features with the allies. After that, we observe the prevalence of unilateral decisions.
